The
National Museum Chumphon is located in the compound of the official
government center of Chumphon at Sam Kaeo Hill, Na Cha Ang Sub-district,
Muang District, Chumphon. It was established in 1994.
The
museum is a two storey building, in native style accompanied by
a contemporary style which consists of the exhibition hall, museum
library, multi - purposed convention hall, office, museum storage,
book - shop & gift shop, cafeteria, etc.
Chumphon
is located in the upper part of southern Thailand. It covers an
area of 6,189.4 Square kilometres.
To
its north is the Prachuab Khirikhan province
To its south is the Surat Thani province
To its east is the Thai Gulf
To
its west are the Ranong province and Mergui in Myanmar the
regional administration of Chumphon province is divided into eight
districts : the Muang District, the Tha Sae District, the Patiu
district, the Langsuan District, the Sawi District, the Thung
Tako District, the Pato District and the Lamae District.
 
The
historical background of Chumphon indicates 3,000 years ago is the
beginning of prehistoric period of Chumphon and developed to a sea
port, Khao Sam Kaeo in early history (1st century B.C. - the late
5th century A.D.) The legend of phra Dhatu of Muang Nakhon Sri Thammarat
is evidence which relates to the name of Chumphon as one of twelve
dependencies of Nakhon Sri Thammarat. From the early Ayutthaya period
until the early Bangkok period, Chumphon was in the southern province
of Ayutthaya. During the reign of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn
(1896) A.D.) Chumphon became a precinct and was changed to a province
in 1917.
Chumphon
retained its city status during the royal visit of His Majesty King
Chulalongkorn to the Malay provinces in the years 1889 - 1909 A.D.
and it was last residence of a son of His majesty King Chulalongkorn,
His Royal Highness Prince Abhakara Kiartwongse, prince of Chumphon
who was royal patron of the royal navy.
 
During
World War II, on 8th December 1941, Japanese troops moved to the
mouth of Chumphon River and launched an attack on Tha Nang Sang
Bridge, Muang district, Chumphon The civilians, military, police
and youn soldiers of Chumphon fought the invasion of the Japanese
troops The bravery of these young soldiers at Tha Nang Sang Bridge
is still remembered by Chumphon people as they erected a monument
for them.
The
cultural heritage which is a unique character of Chumphon is Buddha
processions and a boat racing festival after the eleventh month
(around October) of the lunar calendar. Shadow performance or Nang
Talung is a favorite entertainment of this province.
Chumphon
is an area of beautiful beaches, where nice corals can be found,
is a quiet with a well conserved natural habitat, hills, waterfalls,
one of the best in the southern part of Thailand. While the geography
of this province as located on the narrow part of south peninsular
and that the climate of Chumphon features tropical cyclones which
usually happen during the rainy season and cause damage to property
and loss of lives.
